I was given a very simple 18-piece wooden puzzle. Assembled, it appears like the grandfather 6x6x6 burr, but the pieces are FAR simpler than any puzzle I can find documented on the web. 12 of the pieces are identical (noted as the simplest of all pieces on "Rob's Puzzle Site"). One of the pieces is not even notched at all (the first piece to be removed in the dis-assembly). I can not figure out how to get started with this puzzle. Can anyone help?

Actually... I just found it documented here:
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~uy7t-isn/Puzzle/18PieceBurr/Unnamed18PB/4/

It's called the "Unnamed 18 Piece Burr #4". But, alas, no solution. Help would be appreciated!

Hi David,

Have you tried using Burrtools?
This is a tremendous piece of free software (multiplatform) developed by Andreas Roever which exhaustively investigates interlocking puzzles and can provide solutions to all as long as there are no rotations required.
You can download it from here:
Burrtools site
There are extensive help pages available - I or many others on this forum could help you enter the puzzle shape into the program. It is really pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Let us know how you get on and whether you need further help.

I found Burr Tools last night, and actually put in a few minutes on it this morning (busy morning in the office!). It's INCREDIBLE. I got the solution very quickly, and look forward to assembling the puzzle tonight. As an engineer, playing with the software was about as much fun as working on the puzzle itself!

If anyone needs the BurrTools code for this puzzle, I am happy to send it.
